Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father's departure the family, it was taken care of by her mom, grandmother and godparents. As a young girl, she struggled with an obsessive compulsive disorder. She also experienced anxiety because of the word association. Ford started acting in her teen years and joined a member of the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time but Ford realized this was not the best location for her. Ford rather than applying for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement on her third attempt, applied and won acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character on Doctor Who. Ford didn't complete her degree until 1993. But, by 1991, Ford had made her first television appearance in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that moment, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in TV shows such including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London Burning. Her regular work in theatre brought her into The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate received recognition for her comedy stand-up and became part of her repertoire in 1996.
